What is Treibball?

treibball 1Also known as Ball Herding or Drive Ball, this is the newest dog sport to hit North America. Started in Europe around 2007, in this sport the dog must herd eight large fitness balls across the field and into a soccer net within 15 minutes. The dog uses his nose or shoulder to push the ball. No biting allowed! Your challenge is to direct your dog to each ball while you remain in place near the goal. This means your dog must respond to cues to move left, right, back, forward and stop.

Urban dogs, suburban dogs, retired agility dogs and their handlers all find ball herding a great alternative … no jumping for the dog, no running for the handler.Urban dogs, suburban dogs, retired agility dogs and their handlers all find ball herding a great alternative … no jumping for the dog, no running for the handler.

Dogs should have had a Basic Manners or Puppy Kindergarten class (or the equivalent) and have a good sit or down stay.  This is a relatively new sport that allows dogs and handlers to engage in a form of “urban herding”. Imagine a field with a small herd of pilates balls instead of sheep. Your dog’s task is to “herd” these balls to you and into the goal in the fastest time possible. For dogs and handlers looking to try something new this can be a fun way to learn new skills and drain some energy from your family pet or sport dog.
